New build housing for North Kesteven DC

Chaplin Farrant were commissioned by North Kesteven District Council to provide designs for the redevelopment of a brownfield site.  The contemporary scheme, constructed by D Brown Building Contractors,provides 1 and 2 bed houses and 2 bed bungalows for the council.

The previous buildings had already been demolished and the development aims to reinstate the streetscape.  The design creates and enclosed area around a central open space with the curved forms providing a sense of enclosure. The landscape island creates a focal point to the development while the projecting boxes create an architectural statement. 

A Fabric First approach has been taken with these dwellings with the termal performance exceeding current regulations.  Native hedging on the boundary has replaced existing poor hedging.

The development comprises six general needs one bedroom flats for rent and is an excellent example of sustainable affordable housing. Features include timber framed construction and timber cladding, high levels of insulation, natural light and air tightness, energy efficient heating and materials able to be recycled such as aluminium roofing.

The scheme is also located on a brownfield site, close to community facilities, shops and public transport routes.

The contemporary design blends well with the surrounding trees, creating an attractive environment for the tenants.

This scheme won the unanimous support of Norwich City Council and existing residents for a competition to design a replacement sheltered housing scheme on the site.

The project involved the construction of 31 one- and two-bedroom flats for the elderly.

Within the complex is also a common room, kitchen, laundry, visitor flats, landscaped courtyard and covered parking.

The project is designed with a high level of sustainability reflected in the re-use of a brownfield site, timber framed construction with high insulation and natural light levels.

The development comprised of the replacement of an existing concrete multi-storey car park to provide 1100 car parking spaces, together with a residential apartment development creating 33 private and 15 affordable two- and three-bedroom flats located within two five-storey blocks above the car park.

The majority of flats are located within a curved block which fronts onto and follows the curve of the River Wensum, and is fronted by a riverside walk at ground floor level.

This project is a development of Bussey & Sabberton Bros Ltd existing garage and workshop block fronting Pigg Lane, Bedding Lane, Quayside and Palace Street.

The buildings have been designed to reflect the historic urban setting in a modern interpretation of Victorian industrial detailing. The buildings are tightly packed on the site with a series of "accidental" courtyard spaces to knit into the existing streetscape. Houses are designed vertically to provide each house with high attic rooms with spectacular city views.

The regeneration of Chapelfield in Norwich, the former Nestle site, is a comprehensive redevelopment of the site to provide mixed retail and residential development.

A mix of 140 residential units on three sites wrap around the external envelope of the Chapelfield retail centre. The retail area comprises of a gross internal floor space of 578,485 ft² and fronts onto Chapelfield Road, Chapelfield East and Chantry Road.

Chapelfield gardens fronts onto the old city wall with three residential pods set against the back drop of a five-storey residential building that is articulated three-dimensionally and materially.

The residential development comprises six town houses and ten flats enclosing courtyard parking, all constructed on the site of a former filling station.

The project was designed in consultation with the Planning Officers, who wanted a building of presence at this entrance to the town. The development, in a Conservation Area, is in keeping with the listed building opposite (Cripps Developments' offices) and the design reflects the historical context of Blyburgate.

The Beccles Society awarded the project with its "Best Housing Development of 2007" certificate.

Tack room Conversion

This project saw the extension and conversion of a former listed single storey tack room into a two bedroomed house.

The existing tack room has been incorporated underneath a new second storey and connected by a single storey link to a double storey extension at the rear.  Each of the two elements contain a bedroom and bathroom. 

The building lies below the retaining boundary wall and so is discreet.

The internal treatment is contemporary with glazed screens opening into a secluded courtyard.

The external appearance has been carefully considered to relate to the main house, St John's Croft, which is Grade II listed.

Victorian Farmhouse Extension & Refurbishment

Broadview House is a Victorain farmhouse that has been previously extended in the 1980s.  CFW have designed a  further extension by introducing an oak framed barn and two storey masonry extension to increase the existing accommodation by 50%.  The interior of the house has been completely refurbished to link the new and existing sections together.

A new staircase has been incorporated into the heart of the house, whilst the new barn living space has a vaulted ceiling and a contemporary chimney flue and fireplace.

The internal finishes match modern and rustic, giving a light airy interior with historical reference.

Chaplin Farrant has recently completed a large private dwelling at Brundall Gardens on the outskirts of Norwich.

The three-storey family home provides a spacious, light filled living environment which maximises the stunning views on to a private lake and parkland setting.
